About Us
SOLOMON SCHECHTER (1850-1915) was an outstanding scholar and teacher who presided over the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, the centre of Conservative Judaism. He was the Dean of the Jewish Theological Seminary when Conservative Judaism was founded. Conservative synagogues that created schools at that time named them after him and most of the 78 schools of the Conservative Movement on the continent bear his name.
The Solomon Schechter Academy (SSA) in Montreal became an independent corporation in 1969 catering primarily to families committed to the values of Conservative Judaism. SSA is sponsored by the Conservative Movement and is a member of the Solomon Schechter Day School Association.
The school functions from a modern, spacious, air-conditioned facility on Cote St. Luc Road attached to the Shaare Zion Synagogue, and a newly renovated, air-conditioned Pre-Kindergarten facility two doors away. |
